HBKU Graduate Scholarship 2027 (Qatar) — Tuition Waiver and Monthly Stipend for Master's and PhD
Fully funded Master scholarship in Qatar for International students 2027
HBKU publishes its funding rules openly: doctoral students receive a full tuition waiver, master's students receive 60% to 75% depending on college, and selected full-time students receive a monthly stipend for research or teaching assistance. There is no separate scholarship form.
Eligibility
- Bachelor's degree for master's applicants; master's degree for PhD applicants
- Minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0
- Full-time study required for stipend eligibility
- Not a full-time working professional
- Programme-specific English requirements
HBKU 2027: how Qatar's graduate funding actually works
The most useful thing to understand about HBKU is that there is no scholarship application. Funding is considered as part of admission, and the university publishes its waiver table openly rather than describing the package in vague terms. That transparency makes it straightforward to work out, before you apply, what you would actually receive.
WHAT IT COVERS
HBKU lists standardised tuition waivers by programme type. Doctoral programmes in science and engineering, the humanities, and the juris doctor track carry a full waiver; STEM master's programmes carry 75%; master's and MA programmes in the humanities and social sciences carry 60%; and a small number of programmes, including the LL.M. and MS Economics, carry none under the published table. On top of the waiver, selected full-time graduate students receive a monthly stipend while working as research or teaching assistants, at a rate published as QAR 9,000 per month for international doctoral students and QAR 7,000 per month for international master's students. International students receiving stipends also receive one inbound and one outbound airfare across their studies.
Be precise about what is not covered. Housing is not paid directly, meals are not funded separately, and awards are described as depending on merit or financial need and on the availability of funds. Read a place at HBKU as a substantial tuition reduction plus a stipend, not as an all-inclusive package.
WHO CAN APPLY
Master's applicants need a bachelor's degree; doctoral applicants need a master's degree in an appropriate field. Several colleges publish a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0. English requirements vary by programme, so check the page for the specific degree rather than assuming a single university-wide threshold. Crucially, full-time working professionals and applicants exceeding 40% of full-time working hours are not eligible for a stipend.
Self-check questions:
- Is my degree in a field the college actually teaches? - Does my GPA reach the published minimum for that programme? - Can I commit to full-time study and to the research or teaching assistantship that the stipend requires? - Am I applying from outside Qatar, or am I a resident who needs the later funding deadline?
HOW TO APPLY
Create an account in the graduate admission system and submit up to two applications per academic year, choosing strategically rather than broadly. Applications opened on 1 October 2026. Upload the documents the portal requests after the initial submission.
Materials checklist:
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates - Bachelor's degree for master's admission, master's for doctoral admission - English proficiency evidence where required by the college - Recommendation letters submitted through the portal - Statement of purpose and any programme-specific writing sample - Passport copy
COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
Believing that admission guarantees funding is the most damaging assumption, because the university treats admission and funding as linked but not automatic. Ignoring the assistantship requirement is the second: a stipend is attached to research or teaching work, and a student who cannot take that on loses the money. Choosing the first programme alphabetically instead of the one that matches your undergraduate preparation usually ends in a filter, not a rejection letter with reasons. Finally, checking only one college's language requirement can leave you preparing for the wrong test.
DEADLINE
1 February 2027 for international graduate applicants. Qatari nationals and residents seeking funding have until 15 March 2027.
TIPS TO WIN
Read the admission requirements for your exact programme before anything else, because each college sets its own conditions and the differences matter. Show how your background prepares you for that programme specifically. If you are targeting a stipend, say plainly that you can commit to assistantship hours, since that is the condition the funding hangs on.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU SUBMIT
HBKU runs admission and funding as a single process, so there is no separate scholarship outcome to wait for. Applications opened on 1 October 2026 and the international deadline falls on 1 February 2027, with decisions following as each college completes its review. Because a stipend is tied to research or teaching assistance, expect the question of your availability for assistantship hours to arise. You may submit up to two applications in an academic year, so use the second one deliberately rather than as a hedge. If you are offered a place without funding and cannot meet the fee, ask the college directly about the discounted rate available to self-sponsored students on the basis of financial need.
