Partially funded Master scholarship for International students 2027

The University of Twente Scholarship is aimed at the top 5-10% of non-EEA graduates applying for a Master's starting September 2027. Applications open 15 October 2026 and close 1 April 2027.

Eligibility

  • Be a non-EU/EEA applicant for a Master's programme at the University of Twente
  • Not be a Dutch national, and not have graduated from a University of Twente programme
  • Not be eligible for the Dutch system of study grants and loans, nor for the statutory (EU/EEA) tuition fee
  • Belong to the best 5 to 10 per cent of your graduating class at your home university
  • Meet the general English language requirement: IELTS 6.5, or TOEFL iBT 90, with at least 6.0 (TOEFL iBT 20) in speaking
  • Have applied for a Master's programme and received a (conditional) admission letter or acceptance letter
  • Not be applying for a pre-Master programme, or for a Master's at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (ITC)

The University of Twente Scholarship 2027, usually shortened to UTS, is one of the more honest scholarships in the Netherlands: the university says outright that it is not a full scholarship and advises you not to apply if you cannot cover the rest yourself. If you want a clear-eyed view of what partial Dutch funding actually looks like, this is the programme to study.

WHAT IT IS AND WHO IT IS FOR

The UTS exists for excellent non-EEA students who are starting a Master's programme at the University of Twente in Enschede. There is no single flat amount — the value is set per programme, and the university tells candidates to check the total cost of study and living in the Netherlands before applying, because the scholarship is a contribution rather than a solution.

The bar is deliberately high. You are expected to belong to the best 5 to 10 per cent of your graduating class at your home university. That is not a marketing line; it is the stated eligibility criterion, and the university adds a pointed remark that self-knowledge is of the essence.

There are hard boundaries. The UTS is not available to Dutch students or to current University of Twente students. It is not available to EU/EEA students. It is not available for pre-Master programmes, or for Master's programmes at the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. And there is an edge case that catches people: if you are a non-EU/EEA student but hold a Dutch residence permit that makes you eligible for the statutory tuition fee, you are not eligible either.

THE APPLICATION WINDOW IS UNUSUALLY LONG

The application form opens on 15 October 2026 at 09:00 CET and closes on 1 April 2027 at 16:00 CET, for programmes starting in September 2027. Results are announced in the first week of May 2027.

A long window is not an invitation to delay. The sequencing matters: you have to apply for a Master's programme first and receive a conditional admission letter, then apply for the scholarship using your student number. A conditional offer is enough — you do not need to be unconditionally admitted. But the admission process has its own deadlines, and a slow admission file is the usual reason people miss the scholarship window while technically being inside it.

Language requirements are also stricter here than at many Dutch universities: IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 overall, with at least 6.0 or iBT 20 specifically in speaking. That speaking subscore is where candidates with strong overall scores still fail, particularly in Pakistan and Afghanistan where speaking test slots and preparation are harder to arrange.

IS THIS SCHOLARSHIP REALISTIC FOR YOU?

Ask four questions. Do you have documentary evidence that you are in the top 5 to 10 per cent of your class — not a claim, but something your university would sign? Have you already found the specific Master's programme you want at Twente, and does it sit outside the ITC faculty and outside the pre-Master track? Can you show that you are genuinely not eligible for any Dutch study grant or loan, and not eligible for the statutory tuition fee? And have you worked out a credible plan for the portion the scholarship does not cover, in a city where housing is tight?

If the answer to the fourth question is no, the university's own advice is not to apply.

HOW TO APPLY

Apply for your Master's programme at the University of Twente first, through the normal admission route. Once you receive a conditional or acceptance letter, you can apply for the scholarship with your student number. You can only be awarded one University of Twente scholarship, so choose the programme you actually want.

Your materials checklist: the admission letter from your Master's programme; your student number; proof of English proficiency meeting the IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 90 standard with the speaking subscore; transcripts showing your class standing; and identity documents for the visa process if applicable.

You should also confirm that you comply with the conditions for obtaining a Dutch entry visa. That is a formal requirement, not a formality — the residence permit process is run by the university, and the financial documentation is checked.

Talk it through with an OEAC advisor before you submit — a second pair of eyes on the research proposal is usually the difference between shortlisted and rejected.

OTHER FUNDING TO READ BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Germany's DAAD study scholarships remain the largest fully funded route for a Master's in Europe, and the comparison is instructive:

Qatar's HBKU Graduate Scholarship covers tuition and a monthly stipend rather than a partial contribution:

And Denmark's University of Copenhagen award is another tuition-waiver model, useful for price comparison against the Netherlands:

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID

Assuming the scholarship is a full ride. It is not, and the university says so on the official page.

Applying for the scholarship before you have an admission letter. The student number you need comes from the admission process.

Ignoring the speaking subscore. An overall 6.5 with a weak speaking band does not satisfy the requirement.

Applying for a pre-Master, an ITC programme, or while already enrolled at Twente. All three are excluded.

Budgeting around the scholarship without checking the actual value for your programme. The amount is programme-specific, which means the number in one student's offer letter tells you nothing about yours.

One structural note: Twente is one of the more expensive Dutch cities to find housing in relative to supply, and student accommodation near campus fills early. If you are awarded a partial scholarship, the housing question becomes the real financial question.
