- A resident of a country where the Aga Khan Foundation operates a scholarship office — check the published country list before applying
- Bachelor's degree with an excellent academic record
- Admission to a reputable postgraduate institution already secured or in progress
- Demonstrated financial need — this is a means-tested programme
- Preference for study directly relevant to development
